Hi, I’m Steve Granson, transit project development practice leader at HNTB and chair of the New Rail~Volutionaries.
In my professional role, I help plan and build transit projects in communities throughout the U.S. where, in most cases, transit is the primary transportation option for residents. But in my role with Rail~Volution, you may be wondering, what do I do as a New Rail~Volutionary?
The New Rail~Volutionaries are a national networking group formed to make the Rail~Volution conference and movement more accessible, engaging and meaningful for students, new and emerging professionals, and citizen activists, as well as anyone interested in the movement to build more livable communities with transit. Our group provides networking and learning opportunities, shares innovative approaches and helps develop new leaders so that Rail~Volution can be a stronger resource hub and network for the movement.
In my role as chair of this forward-looking group, I help drive the leadership committee’s annual work plan to coordinate speakers and activities. I and other members of the New Rail~Volutionaries also advance recruitment of interested new and emerging professionals. As the new chair of the group, I have emphasized my effort to reach a diverse group of individuals that have different personal and professional backgrounds and who also represent the geographical diversity of our industry. We are only as valuable as our experiences and ideas!
With new excitement and energy in the group, New Rail~Volutionaries are actively planning for this year’s Rail~Volution transit and community development conference in Vancouver. We are poised to deliver new networking events, fresh topics and formats, and an opportunity to give back to our profession. We also plan to bring back conference favorites such as the PK Slam, but with a twist!
Vancouver is a beautiful city, famous for being one of the world’s most livable cities. Our challenge is to create networking opportunities for conference attendees while exploring what makes this city such a treasure. That is why we are increasing the number of our popular walking tours and extending invitations to the Morning Run Club.
Finally, in alignment with Rail~Volution’s efforts to extend its reach beyond the annual conference, New Rail~Volutionaries are discussing ways to engage more throughout the year. We want to use the same energy and enthusiasm that we bring to the conference to tackle transit and livability issues in our own communities, through networking and collaboration. We want to hear your thoughts and ideas – send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
As professionals, it is incumbent on all of us to provide smart transit solutions that contribute to the development of livable and sustainable communities. This mission drives my career and passion for Rail~Volution.
I hope to hear from you and look forward to seeing you in Vancouver!
